Aesthetic dental fillings, also known as tooth-coloured or cosmetic fillings, are a great option for repairing teeth affected by decay, fractures, or minor damage. Unlike traditional silver (amalgam) fillings, these are made from materials that blend beautifully with the natural colour of your teeth, giving you a more seamless and attractive smile.
Tooth-coloured fillings come with several benefits, including enhanced aesthetics, durability, and the ability to bond directly to your tooth structure for a stronger repair. Plus, they require less removal of healthy tooth material compared to silver fillings, making them a more conservative choice. Whether you are looking for something functional or a more natural-looking solution, aesthetic fillings offer the best of both worlds.

Getting a filling is a straightforward process.
First, your dentist will numb the area, so you won’t feel any pain—just a bit of pressure. Most of the time a special isolation, called the Rubber Dam, will be placed over the area we treat. This protects you from swallowing anything from the previous filling - especially during removal of old silver (amalgam) fillings - and gives you more comfort by not letting water go down on your throat.
You can still swallow and breathe normally while you have the rubber dam on.
Then, they’ll clean out the decayed part of the tooth, remove cracks and fractures and fill the space with a tooth-coloured material that blends in naturally.
It’s all done in one visit, and you’ll be back to normal in no time, with your tooth protected and looking great.
Depending on the size and the number and size of fillings you are getting, your appointment can be anywhere between 45 minutes to a couple of hours long. If you would like to plan ahead with your time, please contact our reception team and they will be able to advise on the length of your appointment.
In most cases, fillings do not hurt because you are numbed with local anaesthetic. You might feel pressure, vibration, or slight movement from the dental tools — but nothing sharp or painful. If at any point you do feel discomfort, you can raise your hand and your dentist can pause and top up the anaesthetic if needed.
YES. Before starting, your dentist will apply a little bit of numbing gel, then administer local anaesthetic to numb the area around the tooth. Once the anaesthetic takes effect (usually within a few minutes), you shouldn’t feel any pain during the procedure.
Tooth-coloured fillings typically last 5 to 10 years, depending on factors like your oral hygiene, where the filling is placed, and how much stress it’s exposed to. With proper care, they can last longer, but they may wear down or discolour over time.
We have a 12-month warranty on our fillings.
As soon as the local anaesthetic wears off, you can eat. However, it is best to avoid chewing on hard foods for the first couple of days until everything settles down.
Your dentist would advise in general to avoid hard foods for a day or two in case the filling needs more adjustment. If you feel discomfort during biting down with the new filling and cannot feel any improvement after a couple of days, contact us and we will review and adjust the filling. In some cases, it is difficult to fine-adjust the bite while you are numbed, there for you might need to return for a quick check and tweak.
